Santa Clarita Sewer Repair: Project example: a 55-foot clay sewer lateral full of roots replaced by pipe bursting under a Newhall driveway — what it involves and what it costs

Santa Clarita Sewer Repair walks through a typical trenchless replacement for a mid-century Newhall home: a 55-foot vitrified clay sewer lateral with roots at most of its joints, running under a concrete driveway to the street, replaced with new HDPE pipe by pipe bursting between two small pits so the driveway stays in place.

The scenario

The house is one of the mid-century single-story homes on the established streets around Newhall, with a concrete driveway running from the garage to the street and a large shade tree in the parkway beside it. The sewer lateral leaves the house near the kitchen, runs under the driveway and reaches the public main under the street, about 55 feet in all. It is the original vitrified clay pipe, laid in short sections with joints every few feet.

The household has had slow drains for a few years and two backups into the lowest tub, each cleared by cutting the roots out with a cable machine. Each time the relief lasts a few months, because cutting roots clears a line but does not repair the joints they come through. This site does not provide emergency service; the example describes the planned repair that follows. A camera inspection shows roots at most joints, a hairline crack along one section near the tree, and a pipe that is otherwise round and on a steady slope. The pipe has not collapsed, which matters, because pipe bursting needs a continuous path for the cable.

What the camera inspection shows:

  • roots entering at most joints along the run, heaviest near the parkway tree
  • one cracked section near the tree, still holding its shape
  • steady slope with no sag deep enough to hold water
  • no collapsed sections, so a cable can pass from end to end
  • the connection at the main in usable condition

What the job involves

  1. The lateral is scoped end to end with a push camera, and a sonde in the camera head is traced from the surface with a locator so the path and depth of the pipe are marked on the driveway and lawn.
  2. Underground utilities are marked before any digging, and two pits are planned: an entry pit near the house, past the end of the driveway, and an exit pit near the sidewalk where the lateral heads under the street.
  3. The pits are excavated to the pipe, the old clay is exposed and cut at each end, and a hydraulic or pneumatic bursting unit with a winch is set in the exit pit.
  4. A steel cable is fed through the old pipe from the exit pit to the entry pit, the bursting head is attached to the cable, and a length of new HDPE pipe, fused into one continuous piece beforehand, is attached behind the head.
  5. The winch pulls the head through the old clay, fracturing it outward into the soil, while the new HDPE pipe follows in the same path; the driveway above stays in place.
  6. The new pipe is connected to the house drain at the entry pit and toward the main at the exit pit with shielded couplings, a two-way cleanout is set at the house end if none exists, and the new line is scoped from end to end.
  7. The pits are backfilled and compacted in layers, the lawn is restored at the pits, and the camera video of the finished line is left with the household.

Hardware and materials

  • New HDPE sewer pipe, butt-fused into one continuous length for the run
  • Bursting head sized to the old pipe, hydraulic or pneumatic bursting unit, winch and steel cable
  • Shielded transition couplings at each end where the new pipe meets existing pipe
  • Push camera with a sonde transmitter and a surface locator
  • Excavation equipment for two pits, shoring as the depth requires, and compaction equipment for backfill
  • Two-way cleanout fitting and riser if the house has no cleanout

What it typically costs in the Santa Clarita Valley

Trenchless replacement, pipe bursting, 55 feet of sewer lateral installed ($90–$200 per foot)$4,950–$11,000
Under a driveway, patio or concrete (+$20–$60 per foot)+$1,100–$3,300
Camera inspection with video+$150–$400
Typical total$6,200–$14,700 (market range, not a quote)

These are typical local ranges, not a quote or an offer; an installer prices the actual job after seeing the wall.

Add-ons often paired with this job

  • New two-way cleanout — +$800–$2,000. A two-way cleanout at the house end gives access in both directions for future camera inspections and cleaning.
  • Hydro jetting and root cutting — +$400–$800. Where roots are heavy, the line is cleared first so the camera can see the whole run before the method is chosen.
  • Section under the street (public right of way) — +$3,000–$9,000. If the section under the street turns out to be damaged too, it is a separate item with its own permit and traffic control.

Why it is done this way

Pipe bursting suits this lateral because the old pipe is still continuous and on a steady slope, and it runs under a driveway that would otherwise be cut and replaced. The new HDPE pipe has no joints along the run, because its sections are fused into one piece before it is pulled in, so there is nowhere for roots to get in. The new pipe follows the old path, which works here because the old path has no sag that needs correcting.

Cutting the roots again would have bought a few more months; the cracked section and the root-filled joints would still be there. Lining was the other trenchless option, but the heavy roots and the crack near the tree make bursting the more direct replacement: it removes the old pipe from service rather than building a new pipe inside it.

Pipe bursting compared with the alternatives on this lateral:

  • Open trench would mean cutting and replacing a long strip of the driveway.
  • Lining would need heavy root removal first and would leave the old clay in place around the liner.
  • Bursting replaces the pipe in the same path with two small pits.

What would change the price

  • A section turns out to be collapsed — the cable cannot pass, so that section is dug and replaced before bursting continues.
  • The lateral is deeper than about 6 feet at the street end — deeper pits and shoring change the depth rate.
  • The section under the street needs replacement as well — that work has its own permit, traffic control and price range.
  • The house has no cleanout — a new two-way cleanout is added at the house end.
  • A gas or water line crosses close to the old pipe — the pits move or the crossing is exposed by hand first.
